It’s a little known fact that the Japanese participated in an event called the Great Fart Wars of 1885.
The event drove the country to its knees as disenfranchised Samurai rebelled against their Meiji overlords by removing their pants and letting loose in the general direction of the imperial palace. Hundreds of men gathered within those few, fateful weeks to wreak bad smelling havoc.
Much collateral damage was done to livestock and pets during those tumultuous days.
These events were all chronicled for posterity in woodblock, as you can see in the proceeding pages.
