To celebrate the Sydney International Food Festival, the flags of participating countries were recreated using  popular local foods from each nation.

No such thing as an American flag. There is a USA flag though…

  • b.Rad

I'd like to make a point about The States aka America aka USA. Last I checked, the USA is the only country with the word America in it. Even though a lot of you attempt to correct people who ask questions like “where is the American flag?” you and the rest of us still know what country is being referred too. So when someone makes a comment towards another person referring to their ignorance for using the term America, please think twice about your own ignorance.

Also, I believe it is also correct to point out that people from the USA are often referred to as “Americans”. This is true throughout the world. Again, before you try and correct another commenter, please be aware of the terms used throughout the world in reference to a group of people from a specific country so you yourself does not come off as ignorant.

  • Ignacio

Your country`s name is United States of America NOT “AMERICA” the shortened version is USA or US. Of course you are american as a brazilian, chilean, argentinean, canadian etc is american. Though i agree that America as a whole is not considered a continent but a Landmass including the continents north and south america.

  • KG2514

I love my USA! Where's the flag?

**IF YOU DONT LIKE AMERICA, YOU CAN GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT OUT!!!**

  • Brown Id Girl

ya greece flag isnt the same colors either… its a flag made from food, isnt perfect.

  • Brown Id Girl

Love the Italia flag, my favorite!

  • Brown Id Girl

And they were created using popular food in that country, not really the same flag colors.

  • Lace

Only participating countries were on there. America didn't enter this whole contest. That would be WHY our American flag is not on there.
    Thanks :)

  • guest

My grandma always used to make a US flag for the 4th of July…she used blueberries with pieces of strawberries and bananas, and just laid them out with toothpicks so you could grab whatever you wanted.

  • Jughead

    gladly

  • amerigo

no it's not, the word America is in 2 continents…North America and South America

  • Diiiirp

Correction, calling yourself an 'American' (apart from being from the United States of America which is decisively different) means you are a moron. America is a continent that includes Mexico and Canada as well as the morons that consider themselves 'Americans'- within the United States of-course. American is as much a nationality as 'Asian', 'European' or 'Middle Eastern'. But Americans have never been that good at geography.

Wrong, There is South america, North america and Central america.

  • crate

The 5th flag is from Brazil, now… think a little… where is Brazil? South America you will say, right? then, South America is part of what continent?…
… OMG, yes, there is an American Flag there!!! and a bunch of ignorants too

  • mike

Really? Are there people from other countries in North or South America that refer to themselves as Americans? I know personally i'm from Canada, and I refer to myself as Canadian. I'm pretty sure that's generally the case, as American is most commonly used as a reference to the United States of America, so other “North Americans” tend to refer to their nationality by country.

I'm assuming that the people fighting about this either like being facetious or are from another continent.
A continent where the name isn't shared by a country, which uses the moniker more commonly.

  • Roger

So the Democratic Republic of Congo can't be shortened to “the Congo” or the People's Republic of China can't be shortened to China? What do you call a person how lives in the United States of America? An American!! Next time you see a Canadian, try calling him “American” too, see how he reacts…

I doubt anyone of the original commenters below are going to read this, but I'll post it anyways. The United States of America have been calling their citizens Americans since the USA broke from Great Britain. They didn't want to call themselves English. There have been other terms, “Columbian, Columbard, Fredonian, Frede, Unisian, United Statesian, Colonican, Appalacian, Usian, Washingtonian, Usonian, Uessian, U-S-ian, Uesican, United Stater.” FYI, “Columbia”

As Roger pointed out below, call a Mexican, or a Canadian “American” and see how fast they correct you. Stop being intellectual snobs and just accept that “America” is the shortened term for the United States of America. If you want to refer to the continent, you say “AmericasSSssSSsss,” or whatever your native language plualizes the continents located between 150 degree and 30 degrees West Latitude.

  • Crate2

south america is not part of any continent… it is a continent. way to call out all those “ignorants” too (oh, and good made-up word there).

  • Kick Inthegroin

There are 7 Continent in the world, they are: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica and Europe. Now, I am from Wales (One of the four countries in the UK) which is in Europe. I would call my flag a European flag but would never referee to myself as European, I am Welsh or British. There is a South American flag in the list up there, not American, American is a short term for USA. If someone said “I'm an American” you automatically think “Oh, they are from the USA” not “Oh, they're from Brazil” or “Oh, they are from Canada” America is not a Continent, it is a country, it's within the continent of North America, which also includes Canada and USA. To finish this. There is a South American flag up there, the American flag is not

  • Neokidjina

Its called the American Flag. Not the USA flag.

By the way,America is USA.Every country in the North,South, and Central Americas refer to themselves by the countries. Some people from some continents refer themselves by continent, the western hemisphere is different,ok?!?

For all of those who complain that folks from the USA should not use “American” as an adjective, perhaps we should use some totally independent source — such as the Oxford English Dictionary (which, as I hope you know, specializes in British English, not “American English.”)

    According to the OED:

    American (A·mer·i·can)
    Pronunciation:/əˈmerikən/
    adjective
    *
of, relating to, or characteristic of the United States or its inhabitants:the election of a new American president
    *
relating to or denoting the continents of America:the American continent south of the tropic of Cancer
    noun
    *
1 a native or citizen of the United States
    *
[usually with adjective] a native or inhabitant of any of the countries of North, South, or Central America
    *
2 the English language as it is used in the United States; American English
